Real-Life Location Equivalent?

So I know this is more about things mentioned in the book and I'm sorry. I couldn't find another place to ask this question. In the book of The Stepford Wives, a "Route Nine" is mentioned several times. This plays an integral part in the story and is seen in this film also, although I'm not sure if any signs showing it as Route 9 are seen. This is the road along which the labs and other businesses are located which are believed earlier in the story to be polluting the water, causing the women to want to clean excessively. It was my understanding that Stepford is supposed to be near Stamford, and is thought by some if not all to be Darien (a "step" from Stamford). However, U.S. Route 9 does not go through the state of Connecticut, and Connecticut State Route 9 seems to not go near Stamford or Darien either. My question is, is there a possible re-interpretation of the location of Stepford that would make the proximity to a "Route Nine" make more sense? Could it possibly be a County Route? Are there any in Connecticut? Or am I just overthinking this way too much, and Route Nine in this story was not based on any real-life road? Thank you for your input in advance.

Hi
I live in Stamford ct and a lot of The Stepford Wives was filmed in New Canaan.
But nearby we have route 7, which runs thru Ridgefield which is very preppy, wealthy and Stepford-esquel. Even more so than new Canaan or Darien
