Miss Salinas

do you think she had a chance at winning if Miss Imperial County and Miss Simi Valley didn't screw up her chances by ending her act with a bang? and I mean literally, a bang.

the true Oscar Miss. playing along with The Academy since Rain Man.

No. I don't think any of them had a chance of winning. For me that's what made this such a brilliant film. None of the girls win. A random character that doesn't appear in the story arc wins. Brilliant.

Yes, I expected the Joan Prather character to win since she had so much screen time. It really surprised me when they had an incidental girl won. It made for a superb non-hollywood bit of film magic.

No one knew who was going to win during the filming. The pageant was held over three nights where the filming was done in the War Memorial Auditorium in Santa Rosa. Tickets were sold to raise money for the local arts council and a real audience was watching each night while the contestants "put on a pageant" doing all their dances, songs, talent and interviews while being filmed. On the last night the winners were decided and Shawn was crowned, while the filming was done of her win. Later there were more scenes filmed of the win, but the reaction shown of her winning and the reaction of other girls was genuine. At the end she and the other winners did get the prizes that were shown at the motel with the empty swimming pool (Another interesting story, as the motel had been booked for the filming but the pool was closed for repair. Ritchie and Hall thought it was a fitting way to end the story with the girls outside in the heat and sun celebrating around a dry pool being sandblasted with dirt flying all over.

Since she was the most phoney and moronic airhead of the bunch, I´m sure she woulda won.

Unless the judges got scared of her psychotic grin, that is.

Maria O'Brien's portrayal of Miss Salinas was brilliant. Without a doubt the biggest phoney among the contestants — although not as phoney as the adults involved — she was no airhead. She knew very well « how to handle her equipment », whether it be flaming batons, lighting, music, food, her accent or the more accurately deemed moronic audiences, who applauded wildly for her. Despite her corny *beep* presentation, she made the other girls look unprofessional.
