NO WHERE IN TOP 250?!?! NO WHERE?!

doesnt this movie deserve a place in the IMDb top 250?? no where in Two Hundred and Fifty?!

I certainly feel it does... this movie captures so many emotions so well... yes it has people breaking into songs whenever possible and the non-Indians may not understand that but in India we love festivities with song and dance... our oldest form of art is also dance... and then music...
AND PLUS, they are not sensless songs without a reason... all songs in this movie convey a part of the story... what could have been shown in a scene or a couple of scenes has been shown in a 4-5 minute song...

Come on guys... this film deserves to be there... personally i would want it to be in the top 10 but leaving aside my personal choice... it should definatly be up in the top 250... no two ways about it... guess we need to browse a little less and need to register to the site and vote a little more...

the movie name "seven samurai" is not to be taken in vain especially whilst replying to dump posts...

So you're saying that the highest grossing bollywood movie of all time is overrated and doesn't deserve a place in the top 250?

reply

No he is only saying that this Movie is not original. While i love this Movie [and gave it 10/10] but seriously watch "Seven Samurai" and it`s remake "magnificent seven" plus "Wild Bunch" and one of the best Movies of all Time "once upon a time in the West". You will clearly see that Sholay is with no doubt a remixed movie of the Movies i listed which in itself is Very Good but unoriginal. There are alot of Remade Movies but they lack of one thing and that is called originallity hell even the songs from Sholay are stolen like the classic "mehbooba" song is from demis roussouss "Say you Love me". So no it doesn`t deserve a top 250 but there are some Movies in top 250 that does not deserve them aswell like Departed & co.

>>even the songs from Sholay are stolen

Thank you for your input. Can u pls tell me where the other songs are stolen from? Thanks again!

well, considering the highest grossing MOVIE (Titantic) of all time (it grossed 12 times more than this one!) isn't in the top 250, the box office earnings argument is pretty irrelevant (whether or not the movie is good enough otherwise is a different matter).

I love Once Upon a Time in the West. But that movie didn't have Gabbar Singh and the dialogue that Sholay had.

Yes Sholay borrowed/stole a lot of ideas from previous films. But the melting together of ideas was so well done.

In my mind it deserves a spot in the top 250. Not alongside Godfather or Once Upon a Time in the West, but rather among Star Wars or Raiders of the Lost Ark. This was an incredibly fun crowd-pleasing movie, and should be recognized for that.

No movie with songs and dances will ever be recognized by the Western folks as a serious movie, guys.

reply

What a silly statement. First, my dear friend, you don't speak for all "Western folks."

Second, you do realize that the film musical was a very popular genre in the United States for many decades, right? You do realize that several musicals have won the Academy Award for Best Picture, right? You may not like the genre - and that's perfectly fine, you're certainly not alone in that regard - but there certainly are quite a few Westerners who take musicals seriously. And rightfully so - it's a wonderful genre.

In fact, there are a number of "movies with songs and dances" that are widely considered to be among the greatest ever made (Love Me Tonight, The Gold Diggers of 1933, Singin' in the Rain, The Band Wagon, Meet Me in St. Louis, The Wizard of Oz, etc. Some of them are quite lighthearted - so not particularly "serious" in that regard - but they are seriously artistically advanced and entertaining and moving. And a few of the best are quite "serious" in terms of subject matter and presentation. See: West Side Story, Pyaasa, The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, etc.

("But, but..." you mumble - "They're not realistic - as opposed to all my favorite action films and romance films and horror films!")

I suppose on a clear day you can see the class struggle from here

"Titanic" isn't in the top 250 because it is THE MOST BORING popular movie of all time. I mean seriously, how does one stay awake while watching it?

reply

It doesn't deserve a place in the Top 250. Just because it made money at the box office, doesn't automatically make it a good film. It simply means people enjoyed watching it.

This movie's not bad, but it's really not as great as everyone makes it out to be. During the awards shows, people reference Sholay as the best Bollywood movie ever, and it's clearly not.

AND for all the people saying it's not original, you're right. It's not original. So what? Yeah they copied some aspects of certain films, but that's not a problem as long as they make a good movie. There are lot of good remakes in Hollywood. Copying ideas is not the problem, Sholay was just an average film, but I suppose the craze over Dharmendra and Bachhan kind of gave it a huge success at the box office too.

It is a good movie all and all, but not top 250 worthy. I give it 7/10.

Sholay not being in the top 250 just means that there are 250 or more better movies than Sholay...

reply

[deleted]

Really? So, the movies in the top 250 are worse than Sholay and are still up there?

Dropped 50 odd places since the first week it placed in the list. New reviewers seem to be bringing it down.
