Supposed to take place in '68?

Who did the continuity on this movie?

Everthing I see screams 1975, when it was released.

Part of the movie's theme is looking back on 1968, knowing what we knew by 1975. So it's somewhat intentional that it doesn't exactly feel like 1968.

Agreed. I don't think Hal Ashby/Warren Beatty ever made a really serious attempt to make the film more accurate chronologically. The clothes don't look 60's and others have commented on vehicles etc.

I saw a Ford Pinto in the background pulling out of a parking lot and I wondered was it still 1968? Pinto's weren't around in 1968. I also thought I saw a 1972 Ford Torino too.

Within the first 10 minutes there is a bold-as-day '71 Buick center screen.

That's minor stuff; myriads of minor details were allowed to dilute the setting. Major costuming effort was given to specific hair and make-up for certain actors and certain sets. But overall, the movie looked exactly like everywhere I lived in the middle 70's.

The same crap occurs with That 70's Show. You get That 2000's Show with some bell-bottoms and a couple of afros, and a VW Bug.

That might have been a problem for viewers in 1975. But today, in 2016, most viewers would say: 1968 or 1975, what's the difference, it's basically the same year.

And they would be mistaken about that. Hair, clothes, music, cars, motorcycles, interior decor, furniture, and just about everything in pop culture was distinctly different in those two years.

Yeah, I know what you mean. It does have the look of the counter culture era having grown tons of moss, but... I don't know... It all somehow worked. Thanks to Jack Warden, and Robert Towne.

Even the hairstyles screamed mid 1970s to me.
