Mary's song

I tracked down a copy of this VHS, after carrying the memory of this series all my life. Still rings true as the most authentic version.

Does anyone know the song - or mantra or poem - that Mary sang to Colin? As best as I can figure, it begins "Chalo mane dil dekay". I'm betting it's either classical poem or a traditional love song. Searches bring up a few potential Urdu songs, but I don't have the language to sift through them all!

I thought it was a particularly sweet scene. Simple and not overdone.

Noticed that no one has replied here, and I wanted to say that I was wondering exactly the same thing. The song she sings is so sweet, but there's no information about it.

Just saw this version on netflix the other day and really enjoyed it! I liked that the character of Medlock was much closer to the book- I never really liked how horribly mean she is in the newest version. And to see the character of Susan Sowerby included was a treat as well!

Hey there- just thought I'd reply again with a possible answer to your question- I did some searching and came up with the song "Chanda mama door ke", which sounds very similar. Here's a link to the site where I found it:

The very last comment is mine, including a link to the Secret Garden sound clip. If this does turn out to be the same song, the fact that it was written in 1955 would be an interesting anachronism! :-)

Let me know what you think...

Yes! That's it! Mystery solved. I tracked down some background and the English translation, too. You're right that's it's a delightful anachronism, written at least fifty years later than the story is set, but a perfect song for the scene anyway.
