Did anyone first get suspicious of Kim Novak. . .

(spoiler)

. . .When she (he) refused to put on the life vest and the helmet in the rescue helicopter? I must admit, I didn't see the ending coming at all -- but my first real inkling of what was going to happen occurred when Kim Novak refused the safety equipment. I wonder why she (he) did that? Was it because she (he) knew it was not going to be needed? Or maybe just because the director and the screenwriter thought it would be ridiculous and unscary for the real villain to wear a life vest and helmet?

I think so. I think it was also to amplify the terrorists when she, uh, transformed (don't want to give too much away )

No ... because I was just nine years old and still hadn't had my whole reality shaken by the revelation in "The Empire Strikes Back."

In retrospect, seems a bit odd; why should she care?

It seems to serve no other purpose than to make the audience feel suspicious about her.

I suppose it's because she knows what's about to happen (when they lower the body from the mast) and doesn't want to put on any more "puny mortal stuff" before the big reveal.

Truthfully, would Alejandro Rey have looked as scary with a puffy orange life vest and an oversized helmet over that priest attire?
