How did they fake the horse being it by a car?

It looked pretty real to me and I am wondering how they did it (and hope they didn't actually hurt the horse in any way).

I have always wondered the same thing...and I actually met Linda Blair in 2000 and forgot to ask her!! But knowing how crazy she is about horses, I can't imagine they actually hurt the animal. But damned if it didn't look like that car plowed right into it on the busy street.

I wonder if they are able to train a horse to do exactly what a stunt person does when they get "hit by a car". The stunt person actually hops up on the hood as the car comes.

I wondered the same thing. I watched that scene frame-by-frame and it looked like you could see the car actually starting to hit the horse's legs before they cut away. If it is faked, it's extremely well done.

the car wasn't moving that fast and it's probably a well trained stunt horse that has been featured in many other westerns at that time. If you watch westerns in general there a lot of scenes where horses fall to the ground while running. While it looks like real time full throttle speed to our eyes it's actually a rehearsed fall or collision and the horse knows how to fall to the ground without breaking its legs

That's good. I found it hard to imagine that they would cause harm to the horse.
