Is this film still disturbing by today's standards?

I'm not trying to say this film should be easy watching. I understand it is still very shocking and repulsive to watch. I only ask because I have been considering watching this movie and I am slightly afraid to. I have seen many violent and disturbing films like Irreversible and Antichrist, so I was wondering if I would be able to take this film on (to see what its all about).

Oh *beep* yeah.

See, that's the thing. I just watched the trailer for Salo and it looked boring as all hell. If I hadn't been recommended it by general word-of-mouth, I never would've bothered watching it, it looked that sh!t. I'm just hoping it genuinely is shocking and disturbing as opposed to the Exorcist-style "it was scary in it's time"

But having seen A Serbian Film, Martyrs, et al, I'm expecting this to be as hardcore as anything. I know they can't show that stuff in trailers, but hell, at least The Human Centipede gave a tad more away, lol

I just watched it today. Although there are films today that definitely take violence further, it was still an overall frightening film based off its subject matter and the other events that take place.

Found it extremely shocking and disturbing the first time; not so much the second time. If you want cheap and mindless Human Centipede-like thrills look elsewhere. This film is an important work of art.

I watched all those films but Salo disturbed me far worse than even A Serbian Film - psychologically. It is just a *beep* of the worst kind. This film isn't a "shock" film to me, it's the whole experience which is wholly disturbing.

The look of glee and pleasure the four main characters have on their faces when they rise smiling when a girl is crying because her mother died trying to save her..

It's a different kind of disturbing compared to anuses being sewn onto lips.

I'm not saying that having my lips sewn onto an anus wouldn't disturb the hell out of me, but that was more horror movie stuff.

How does the mother die?

I have to say Corporal that in my opinion it doesn't even remotely come close to the films you mentioned. I have been on the verge of watching this film for about 3 years but just never had the balls to put it on, until last night.

It's kind of a hard one to judge as the reason that people have it on top of their most disturbing list has to be because of the overall tone of the film as the actual on screen content is like watching Bambi compared to the fire extinguisher scene in Irreversible. For blood and guts the film is a walk in the park compared to the more extreme stuff coming out today. However it is quite unsettling (Again, nothing compared to irreversible) as it's basically 4 guys torturing a group of teenagers for 2 hours, but in an art-house-y kind of way, the dialogue is all poetic nonsense and what not.

I didn't find it nearly as awful as I thought i would.

So did you watch it?

I too was intimidated, but after a while my curiosity got the better of me. I actually really liked it for its story line, costuming, sets and scenery, but I found the "gory" scenes to be pretty tame. The tongue & eyeball scenes made me wince a little, but overall, the gore is pretty minimal.

I found the sh*t eating scenes pretty funny, because of the acting. In fact, I thought most of the acting was waaaay too-over-the-top. The editing was pretty sloppy as well, tho I think this in general about Italian horror flix.

I don't believe it lives up to the hype, but I did enjoy it.

Psychologically, yes, Salo is still disturbing and holds up even almost 40 years later.

I'm half way through the movie (it's long). Very disturbing although I have to say that its a lot less graphic than I expected.

reply

Which is something I was sort of disappointed by, but what can you do. Even without the depravity, it's still strong on its impact.

Just saw it for the first time - yes, it's extremely disturbing by today's standards. While not as visceral as most modern horror movies (although, then again, that Circle of S*** sequence...), it is extremely shocking and unpleasant. Emotionally, it is very detached, which is key to the unsettling nature of the film. There is no sense of redemption or salvation that is present in mainstream cinema and the victims most of the time seem numb to the depravity that they are subjected to.

Yeah, it's messed up.
