He laughed a lot and coughed afterwards. If you ask me, Rankin Bass made him a little too scary. For kids I mean.

He wanted to live forever, I believe he was worried because he was already old and sick which explained the coughing. My thought at least.

Thats becuse he was Golums Cusin.

No really, cuse he was about to die, or w/e and he was caw-ing after he talked, cuse hes a bird.

I thought Eon the Terrible was pretty gnarly. Paul Frees did a nice job as the cackling voice of the dastardly bird.

He was extremely old (an eon equals a billion years), which could explain the cough.

Eon coughed all the time because he was a miserable old sod who lived on an iceburg.
