McDowell Commentary
The special features on the DVD list a commentary by McDowell. That'll be good, he tells good stories, which hopefully he'll do here.

shareHe has someone helping him with the commentary. It should be very interesting. I was told there will be a lot of Oliver Reed stories told during the movie. I plan to watch it with the commentary on when I view it for the first time.
shareGot the DVD the other day. Nice crish transfer. Nice extras. And as suspected excellent commentary by McDowell and film historian Nick Redman. Malc tells some great stories, and they talk a bit about Tom Bell, who unfortunately died a couple of weeks ago. Top effort Twentieth Century Fox. Also found out why Richard Lester doesn't make films anymore.

It's a decent commentary, though a bit thin in patches (towards the end McDowell and Redman seem to run out of things to say). McDowell seemed to have a lot of affection for the books and the Flashman character, though he felt he was less-than-perfect casting. His stories about Oliver Reed and Alan Bates were pretty amusing. A fun listen for Flashman and McDowell fans.
"Haven't they replaced you with a coin-operated machine yet?"
