Royal Flash

Anybody know where I can beg, borrow or steal a copy of Royal Flash?

Unfortunately I do not, but I would like a copy too. Can you let me know I you find one, or which company has the distribution rights.

reply

I would also like a copy of Royal Flash and I don't even know where I can buy it.

reply

what I want to know is why they didnt make any follow up films. there have been quite a few "flashman" books published since, in fact George macdonald frazer has only just released a new one. I also think Malcom macdowell was perfectly cast as harry flash- he plays an excellent "cad"

reply

where did you see 'royal flash'? was it on tv?
I think they should make new movies - personally, I always thought COnnery would have been ideal in his youth, now I think you need someone like Hugh Jackman - Flashman is a big lad, thats got to carry across.

reply

I remember seeing Royal Flash on HBO years ago.
To my knowledge, it has never been released on either VHS or DVD,
and is rarely, if ever shown.
Does anyone know if there is an issue with distribution or ownership?

I love the flashman series, and George Macdonald Fraser's film work (he wrote the screenplays for the Oliver Reed Three Musketeers movies, for example). Unfortunately Flashman doesn't translate well into film. The really wonderful thing about the Flashman books is the hilarious 19th century British slang; most people (especially us Americans) would have trouble understanding a Flashman movie if the dialogue were authentic.
I'm not surprised that the one Flashman movie was based on Royal Flash. This was the only Flashman book that didn't involve lots of huge battle scenes. It would cost a hundred million nowadays to do the other stories justice, and no studio will risk that much money on a historical comedy.

reply

Have you seen the Sharpe series? In fact the production company behind that are apparently in the early stages of working on producing 3 Flashman films.

reply

is that true?? bloody brilliant news if it is, I cant wait!!

reply

See http://www.celticfilms.co.uk/ look under "Projects in Development".

reply

Is this true?? Any news on who has been chosen to play him or whether they are going to be cinema releases or TV movies?

reply

See link above. It's for TV. I would imagine it's still in the very early stages of development.

For my money, Ben Chaplin (Thin Red Line, Murd3r 8y Num8ers and the rather excellent Game On) would be the perfect Sir Harry Flashman. He's got the acting chops, has displayed comedic talent and could convince as the lecherous poltroon.

reply

Or Alexander Siddig.

reply

I think Rufus Sewell would fit the part.

reply

Sounds like a good choice to me.

reply

I'd go with Paul Bettany, and bring back McDowell as the older Flashman doing the narration.

reply

The author, GMF himself, said that in his opinion the perfect Flashman would have been Errol Flynn. He also said his "old mate" Ollie Reed (from their Three and Four Musketeer days) would have been good. In the author's opinion, there are no actors today who have the charisma and looks to play Flashy. Although he did say that someone suggested Daniel Day-Lewis to him and he reluctantly agreed that he might carry it off.

reply

The big issue for someone playing Flashy true to the books is someone who can pull off the looking bluff and hearty whilst inwardly quivering like a rabbit. Also you want someone who really does have that Errol Flynn charisma. I can't think of an actor today who could carry it off.

reply

Check out Toby Stephens in Die Another Day. He practically IS Harry Flashman!

reply

Especially after seeing him as the villian in "Sharpe's Challenge" (2006).

Flash for Freedom would be hugely controversial though. I don't think the movie going public is ready for a romp through the ins and outs of the slave trade quite yet!

@@@What happened to my cigar commercial? What happened to my AGENT? Bastard must've died.@@@@

I don't think Africans are quite ready to accept the fact that it was THEM (along with the Arabs) who started the slave trade in the first place, much better to blame "The white man" rather than to hold their hands up to that one.

It looks like the remake is in development hell!!

Its that man again!!

reply

I think you're forgetting the early scenes in Africa.

"Lola, I love you, you selfish bitch!"

reply

I love the idea of malcolm macdowel playing an older version of flashy. IMO he was the perfect choice for flashman, shame they never made more.

At Five foot 8 inches, Chaplin is alas WAY too short to play Flashy.

I have my collection of Flashman and other Fraser books on ebay, including a vhs copy of Royal Flash, if anyone is interested, it is item # 120024091205 on ebay.

reply

I think Liz has a very valid point there. There would always be a few problems with political correctness whichever novel you put on the big screen.

As to actors, I can't think of anyonje who could pull it off completely, apart from maybe Pierce Brosnan as an older flashy

reply

After seeing Tim Dalton in Hot Fuzz, I think the other ex-Bond could do a very passable older Flashy, perhaps Flashman and the Dragon.
