I was actually 50/50 thinking it might be a remake

It's, more or less, a remake of The African Queen. But what worked in True Grit is also present here. If less effectively so.

First time I saw it said the same thing (TAQ) except at the end they don't stay together and it all takes place on land.

Some of the elements in the book which didn't make it into True Grit appear in this film (e.g. Eula's assisting with Rooster's bookkeeping).
