Never seen it. Looks like a movie for the queering.

What's it's appeal?

reply

What’s yours?

I mean your homophobic insinuations are thrilling and all, but I think most people would at least watch a film before they jump online to make a judgement.

You can probably give RHPS a big pass. It’s fun and has great songs but the cross dressing and *shudder* queerness would likely send you into a tailspin.

Stick with The Sound of Music. Better for your mental health.

Who shudders at homosexuality nowadays? Are you a troll or something? The sound of music is a great film btw.

reply

I’d say people who say shit like “looks like a movie for the queering” but you tell me.

To answer your question:

RHPS is a shitty movie that achieved cult status due to audiences doing a sort of "MST3K" kind of thing to it. Performance art during screenings saved the movie. When it rains on screen, people would hold newspapers above their heads and shoot squirtguns in the air. During a wedding scene they would throw rice in the air, etc. Assorted interactive chingus was whatmade it fun at all. Then there were the funny people in the audience who would shout out questions at the screen which would precede humorous lines. A guy would run up to the screen and stand in a certain spot where a bolt of lightning would strike and he would convulse and fall over. Stuff like that was cool.

But then it became a showcase for attention whores who just wanted to dress up like the characters in the movie and parade around in front of the screen sing/shouting along with the sour soundtrack. Sometimes you can find a mix of these two styles but rarely. Almost exclusively the latter.

The movie is terrible unless you like "campy on purpose" which to me is not authentic campy.

Sound of Music is one of the greatest musical of all time. Wonderful.

Detailed analysis for someone who’s “never seen it”.

What in the world makes you think I didn't see it? I've been to 3 showings. First 2 were like the former description I gave above. They were fun to attend. Like getting drunk and bashing a bad movie. 3rd one (and all I have heard about from people) was like the latter description. You must be a fan that I have upset and your rage is affecting your reading comprehension.

reply

Sorry I mistook you for the OP, just saw he A. I’m a little tired.

reply

All good.

reply

For what it’s worth I like both Rocky Horror and Sound of Music, I would have thought it obvious that I made that statement to suggest something a little more traditional for the OP.

But really they are both camp, camp as fuck actually. Just in different ways.

reply

It's not easy having a good time. Even smiling makes my face ache.

reply

SoM campy? We have different views for sure.

My initial post was to respond to OP's question of "What's its appeal?" I chimed in at post's end with my opinion of SoM as the detail seemed to be running perspective of bias. Like if he was going to listen to my opinion about RHPS, he'd know it was from someone who enjoyed SoM also. So yeah, I got what you were going for in your reference but I wasn't replying to you.

reply

Thank you very much for your detailed answer. Now I have an idea what the movie is like. It's not appealing to me so I don't think I'll watch it but I am very much interested about it's position in cult.

sad fat lonely nerd

reply

My accurate description triggered you. Why?

Sad? Nope. Generally very happy. I'm one of the happy ones. (just like you, obviously)

Fat? Not reeealy. I'm only about 15 lb overweight. My fighting weight is 200 but I enjoy life in the 210 to 215 range. I look great.

Lonely? Not by a long shot. I could use more solitude even. More friends than I have time for and there is the wife as well.

Nerd? Well, yes. Kid at heart. I play tons of board games and am a fan of monster movies and sci-fi. I'm also the know-it-all style of nerd. I think I'm being helpful with information but cranky, low-self-esteem types think I'm showing off.

I hope that clears it up for you.
