Cult classic?

I know there is a huge following of this film, but after watching it last night I sort of understand why, but I was not impressed. Sorry to hear Tim Curry had a stroke in 2015.

Oh, this film is the very definition of the cult classic! Bombed on initial release, got shown at midnight along with other films, developed this bizarre audience-participation ritual by means I don't understand. It was totally organic, it originated among audiences and the filmmakers were as surprised as anyone that it happened.

Of course if a film doesn't do it for you it doesn't, but this is the one film whose popularity is not actually based on the film's merits. Of course a person who likes strange things, musicals, Tim Curry at his best, or gay/bi/drag stuff can enjoy the film on its own merits, but for most it's as much about the audience participation experience as the movie. The DVD has an audience-participation track, but it's not the same as going through all that weirdness in a movie theater.

A nearby theater has a Rocky Horror night a couple times a year and the line goes around the block!

Everyone should go to an audience participation "Rocky Horror" some time in their life. And I have to tell you that standing in the line may be an interesting experience in itself!

I wonder if they pair it with Glen or Glenda!

I'd say the movie is highly dated in the sense that if you did not "grow up" with it in your youth as part of an interactive audience movie experience, getting into it later in life would likely be hit or miss (mostly miss). But if, like me, you experienced it when in HS or college (or that age group), you'd be far more likely to consider it a stand-out cult classic.

Well it's one of the 100 cult films features in the "bible" of cult movies! I am, of course, referring to Cult Movies (1) by Danny Peary. Like you, he lists the reason it's a cult move but isn't that impressed with it either. It's a dull affair, the songs are hit and miss (definitely more miss) and it's only redeeming feature is Tim Curry. Who has to be cinemas' greatest transvestite. The problem for me is there is just not enough of a story or jokes to sustain a film of this length.

I just love the background singers on it. Well, and Susan Sarandon too.

I went to a couple of screenings of this movie, this past October. It was really cool!
