This doesen't make sense

After the cult knows that the 2 couples witnessed the sacrifice...there were soooo many instances were they could have killed them without having to do these dumbass chases. My theory is the sheriff was still a "sheriff" and didn't want to kill them without giving the couples a chance to leave and not spread the word of what they saw. That's why the sheriff was trying to convince them that the cult killed a dog and not a human (I bet they put the dog there right after the sacrifice to justify the story)

That's also why the cult left the RUNE on the back windshield saying "if you cause evil over this..it will be returned 9 fold..blah blah" but the couples did not want to let it go. They still were giving them a chance. The gas station Satanist overheard that they planned to go to Amarillo and do the blood test. THAT's when it seemed the cult needed them dead.

Anyway- then they had another chance at the gas station (right before the big chase)to kill them but they didn't.

thoughts?

Perhaps the chase gave them a thrill. Sort of a way to gather up as much dark energy as possible through the fear of their lives before the kill. Satan and the demons in Hell are sadistic and love to torture the souls of the damned in Hell, so it makes sense to me that his worshipers would be equally sadistic.

Burn, witch! Burn, witch! Burn! Burn! Burn!
