Is it better than Suspiria?

I saw Suspiria, and I loved it, it was amazing. I also hear it cited as Argento's masterpiece, but this film here has the higher rating on IMDb, so I'm wondering if that accurately reflects the general opinion of this film.

Is it really better? I've never seen it, and I'd like to.
Also, does it use that psychotic coloring of lights Suspiria had? Because I loved that.

For me, Suspiria is absolute perfection. The GREATEST achievement in horror movies history. Deep Red, is a masterpiece, but just not as good as Suspiria, but highly recommended. While it does not feature the ´psychotic coloring of lights´, the film is visually stunning, and very otherworldly, nightmarish and surreal, despiste the story being quite ´normal´.

The theater is like a faithful wife. The film is the great adventure, the costly, exacting mistress

The 'psychotic coloring of light' in Suspiria always meant nothing to me. Come on, that was just a set of lights being turned on and off. What I pay attention to most is the story, and Suspiria didn't have much of one.

Therefore, I MUCH prefer Deep Red. Heavier on plot, mystery and murder, lighter on gimmicky lighting effects.

reply

I liked Suspiria largely because it went beyond film as a medium simply for telling a story. One man's gimmick is another man's flourish. Although the use of music in Deep Red leading up to the murders was fantastic, overall I enjoyed watching Suspiria a bit more.

reply

it's not better, just... different.

You cant realy compeare them, while Susperia playes with the supernatural and Mythical, Profondo Rosso is like a Crime story, with a reason fur the murders and a Killer that is kind of obvious

Both are grate in their own ways, i still like Susperia more, becuse of its dark and Supernatural feeling!

Both films are fantastic but I prefer Deep Red.

I prefer Deep Red since it keeps the realistic touch. I find it rather irritating when the mistery's explanation is found in a supernatural universe. Especially when the movie starts being realistic. Deep Red keeps the plot in "our universe" where no witches, magic or dark forces exist, so the murderer can be found among the characters and is a "normal human" like anyone of us... with the exception that he/she is a sick bastard....

I love it that Suspiria has a simplicity only found on fairy tales... its one of my favourite movies ever. I truly don't care about things being "realistic". Realism is relative in art.

reply

I prefer Deep Red, but it was my first Argento film.

reply

Exactly what I think. I love Suspiria but Deep Red is a much stronger movie. Suspiria demonstrates the art of Argento but it doesn't show his scripting at best. I don't think Deep Red does either, but it's clearly better than Suspiria.

Both are good, watch Deep Red and make your own decision. If you enjoyed his other works I can't see you disliking this one :)

I've enjoyed Deep Red more: it had better acting, better dialogue, a more coherent story. The suspense and tension was unbearable at times, I felt chills down my spine a few times. I didn't get that from Suspiria.

This world is a comedy to those that think, a tragedy to those that feel.

I think Deep Red is his best film, maybe only eclisped by Tenebre.

I think MOST of his films are better than Suspiria, though. I never got the big deal with that one, besides the opening murder and the beautiful oversaturated colors.

I never got the big deal with deep red. I think Suspiria was the best one.

I love both, but I think I will have to say I prefer DEEP RED

Its just a better movie overall

reply

Favorite Argento film is Phenomena.

"Deep Red" and "Suspiria" are both great, but IMO "Tenebre" beats them both.

I actually think Deep Red, Tenebre and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage are all better than Suspiria.
