Yes, an excellent film,but...


Just saw it on TCM and enjoyed it immensely. The use of all practically unknowns (.."and introducing Nicholas Ball"!!)and the (it seemed) deliberate lack of any officers, except as disembodied voices emphasised how WW2 was an Everyman's War. The Warrant Officers and NCO's ran the whole thing, trained, cajoled and threatened raw recruits until they were a band of fighting men.

My only "but" is that truly odd start, a blank screen, then faint sounds to indicate something was happening - I admit at first I changed channels to see if the TCM signal had been lost - I wish Robert Osborne had forewarned viewers that it started in darkness...

A little gem, but oddly out of place in 1975, it seemed much more of the immediate post-war disaffected period.







Don't touch that!
