Was Kelly Garrett's version always in the film? My VHS has Olivia Newton-John's version over the end credits. I think I prefer the latter.

No, Kelly Garrett sang the nominated song on the Oscars. That's her singing on the 1976 Academy Awards telecast. Olivia Newton John sang it in the film.
