Ruscico DVD

Does anyone know what the new DVD of this film from Ruscico is like? I've read that it is a 4:3 picture - but I highly doubt that the original is 4:3...

reply

I have recieved my copy of the DVD. It is, unfortunately, a 4:3 edition. The IMDB says it is 2.35:1 film. How could Ruscico do this, crop a beautiful looking film like this? I have written them asking if there is a correct DVD available. Fingers crossed!

reply

I actually do believe that 4:3 is the original format. 1) when watching the movie one never feels that something is cut out anywhere - there is plenty of room left over the heads and at the sides. 2)Secondly I would suggest that an original 2.35:1 would have been pan&scanned into 4:3, and that is not the case here - RUSCICOS dvd is not using a pan&scan copy. And as I suggested it does not seem to be zoomed as well. 3)And, the 4:3 format was also widely used in Soviet Union, just look at air crew from 1980 with 4:3 as the original format.

I do believe that imdb is wrong in this case - what do you others that have seen it on dvd think?

Let us know if you get an answer Dean!

I agree wth you. I have watched it and you never get a sense that it has been panned and scanned. I was expecting the worst but was pleasantly surprised.

How about a DVD release for Sergei Bondarchuk's Red Bells and Mexico in Flames?

The version I got, came in a 2 disc deluxe edition from russiandvd.com.
The sound and picture quality was exceptional good.
