Would do absolutely nothing vs the frontal armour (unless a miracle shot).share
I just finished watching the movie tonight and that's exactly what I kept thinking. This flick totally FAILS the believability test. The movie shows ordinary Russian infantry knocking off one panzer after another with nothing but those pathetic AT rifles. If panzers were that easy to kill, the Wehrmacht would never gotten 500 miles deep in Russia. Hell, if tanks were that fragile, nobody would ever have built them to begin with.
So much for authenticity, but there's also a dramatic issue here. The AT gunner, Lopakhin is the main character. The movie makes a big deal out of his skill with the AT rifle. His supposed expertise with this weapon, and thus importance to his unit and the war effort, is why his internal struggles matter. However if the deadly and terrible AT Rifle is just a useless piece of crap as it actually was in reality, then Lopakhin is also irrelevant. He becomes just another pathetic Soviet grunt serving no purpose except to soak up German bullets.
still, AT rifles were comparetively effective against lite and middle tanks. Till 1943 germans didnt have wide use of heavy tanks, thus AT rifles would do a good job against panzer 1-4.
40-60 mm of armor - this is the limit for AT rifles
