why did they lobotomize McMurphy?

those higher up guys know he's only pretending. plus, once he knew he was going to be lobotomized, he would have protested and confessed

would they transfer him to prison for attacking Nurse Ratched instead?

reply

As she had said to the board earlier, she believed they could help him. Whether or not she was genuine, the board believed her. Labotomies were used to alleviate aggressive behaviour - amongst other things - so it stands to reason. Of course, that course of 'treatment' has been rubbished since.

reply

Because he tried to kill Ratched, which came after

1. raping a teenager
2. breaking out and bringing a bunch of mental patients with him.
3. breaking hookers and booze in and causing total chaos in the process.
4. getting violent with other staff before Ratched.

It was the last straw. He was their patient at that point and this was their final option in their eyes. Attacking a higher up - and a woman - was not acceptable.

Spoilers, *beep*

Limit of the Willing Suspension of Disbelief: directly proportional to its awesomeness.

reply

Spoilers? Please. This movie was released 39 years ago.

reply

you know, the world doesn't revolve around the year 1975. There are actually people born after that mythical year who have not had the fortune to see the movie yet, and spoilers are spoilers no matter how old the movie/book/story is. So piss off.

reply

Telling people you disagree with to piss of. What an unoriginal jerk.

reply

Spoilers aren't an opinion.

I'm telling your smart@ass, IMDB attitude to piss off.

I am laughing here thinking how stupid you are. You keep replying to this thread that spoils the movie. Every time you do this the thread moves to the top so everyone can read it.

reply

Reading comprehension is not your strongest suit. And your insults are weak which tells me you are not very bright. Once again you reply to this thread bumping it to the top while protesting that the title contains spoilers. Brilliant.

reply

Children please, can't we just agree that you're both right? Some people have not seen the movie despite its year of release so perhaps the thread-starter should have been more discrete in his choice of subject line. On the other hand, if you haven't seen the movie and yet you come to its discussion board I don't think you can have too many complaints that you saw a thread whose title tells you something about what happens in the movie. Do either of those things make either of you stupid? No, so don't worry about what the nasty man is saying.

If you go to a message board of a movie you havent seen and you get spoiled, you have yourself to blame.

reply

This argument is defunct, because you can clearly see message board topics directly below the user reviews; you don't even have to click on the message board link. It takes all of 2 seconds to put a spoiler warning in there, and is simply message board etiquette. Don't make excuses for laziness.

Exactly. People come here to DISCUSS the movie. If you read something you didn't want to read, tough schitt.

reply

Spoilers? Please. This movie was released 39 years ago.

doesnt matter if the film was made 100 years ago, show some respect. dont spoil it for people who havent seen it.

theres no time limit.

reply

But, again, anyone who visits a message board devoted to discussing a movie s/he hasn't yet seen is basically asking to have the movie spoiled. The answer is simple: Watch the movie first and then come to the message board.

reply

I bet degree is dead by idiocy right now. Poor soul didn't even get to watch, or read, one flew over the cuckoo's nest.

reply

It was the only way they could control him and that was their primary aim, as with any patient in that facility.

My real name is Jeff

reply

Basically, because he was a pain in Ratched's ass and she had the pull to make it happen.

reply

Because he had attacked Nurse Ratched and tried to kill her.

reply

The reason he tried to kill her was because he was overcome with grief knowing that she was directly responsible for the kids death.

reply

Ratchet couldn't control him and was loosing control of the ward because of him. She was the kind of person who has to have complete control and defeat anyone so by letting Mac out he would have defeated her whereas if he's lobotomised the people in the ward see she's defeated him

There was another reason, FEAR.

She was afraid that if there was an investigation into the kids death Murphy would testify that he killed himself as a direct result of her attacking the kid psychologically by threatening to tell the young mans mother about his little adventure. The kids hear of being exposed made him kill himself. Her fear of being exposed as a sadistic manipulator by Murphy made her fix it so Murph could no longer talk.

reply

I don't find that very believable.

Any testimony from McMurphy would be laughable, since he is more or less nuts in the eyes of society.

It would be a bigger threat to her if any of the voluntary patients to leave and then speak of their experience, but she only lobotomized the only guy that could never leave.

No, he was lobotomized because she had all she needed to get it done and finally get rid of this problem once and for all, her only goal was control over the ward and the patients and that is also why she was so sickeningly happy after everything had settled down again.

She never cared for Billy and she never cared for any of her patients either, she even enjoyed seeing patients showing opposition, having a hard time, so she was sadistic as well.

reply

In the book, Chief Bromden actually says that her goal is to eventually lobotomize everyone. Even without reading the book and just watching the movie it is pretty clear she had no intention of helping anyone.

reply

Well I don't know how accurate a narrator Chief Bromden in the book is. I mean he does imagine hoses and suction tubes coming from the ceiling at night, and I do not think the reader is meant to believe that was really happening. I mean he is actually crazy in the books. Does that mean Nurse ratchet isn't evil? No she is pretty bad. but Chief is a paranoid schizophrenic his perception of reality may not be accurate.
