'Whats tom got to do with it?' 'I think shes tryna even up the score'

A little confused what Hackman's character meant during this little exchange of dialouge.

I dont understand why he got the idea the she was with Iverson. He goes to the mechanic, then he talks to the stunt men in NM, and I dont remember any indication of why she would be with Iverson....was he just turning over every stone?

And what does the whole "Even up the score" line mean?

The answer is simple. In the film, Harry Moseby was told that Delly was living with Iverson.

If you remember, Harry first looked for Delly's former boyfriend Quentin (the mechanic), and found that she had left him for Marv Ellman the pilot (who beat Quentin up and we saw the marks on his face). So Harry went to New Mexico to find Ellman. There he met the stuntsman Ziegler (whose significance became clear later) and they watched Ellman flying a plane. Later Harry talked to Ellman and was told that Delly had gone to Florida to live (in an incestuous relationship as we learn later) with her stepfather Iverson.

thanks. I figured logically with the story that is where he was told, and watched the whole scene again and some how missed it. must have been tired.

What about "even up the score", though?

Is it because she liked Marv, and his mom slept with him? So she wanted to sleep with her stepdad to get back at her?

Yes

We don't know that Dely and Tom ever slept together; Tom admits to Harry that he was tempted, but there was no evidence anything actually happened.

Plus why would Arlene care about that anyway?

I think Dely got upset with Arlene sleeping with Marv, but the way Dely wanted to "even up the score" was by going to stay with her step-father and therefore take away her trust fund money from Arlene.
