The Sequel is going ahead!!!!!!!

John Hurt is currently in negotitations to appear in the sequel to 'The Naked Civil Servant' - called 'An Englishman in New York'. The film will follow Crisp's life from when he emigrated to the USA in 1981 to his death in 1999.

I wonder whether the gap of 33-34 years between the two films is the longest period between an original film and its sequel (starring the same actor)?

Saw this excellent little drama again on BBC4 last night & had forgotton just how wonderful it was (am too young to remember the original 1975 transmission though!)
In answer to your question though as regards sequels with original stars well the potential 33-34 year gap between these two films will certainly put it in the running-Per the book "Film Facts (by Patrick Robertson) at present the longest interval between the original film & its sequel with the same star currently stands at 34 years actually.
This is held by actress Lee Patrick who starred in 1941's "The Maltese Falcon" playing Sam Spade's secretary "Effie" & who reprised her role for the 1975 sequel "The Black Bird" when the detective agency had been taken over by Sam's son (played by George Segal).
Hope that answers your query!

Thanks for that information, Ambiance!! 'An Englishman in New York' is slated for a 2009 release, which would be 34 years since the original, so I think it stands a chance of claiming the crown.
