the naked civil servant catchphrases

Does anyone know if the phrase 'I Am The Only Gay In The Village' was ever used in the film The Naked Civil Servant ?

reply

No, that phrase does not appear in The Naked Civil Servant, although it's hysterical in Little Britain.

My favorite was when Crisp gets attacked when a group of ruffians drag him out of a cab and beat him senseless. Crisp struggles up off the ground, all bloody and groggy, straightens up as much as he can, trying desperately to regain his dignity and says to the men: "I must have said something to OFFEND you gentlemen!" and staggers off.

reply

The judge at Crisp's trial says: 'You have been suffering from sexual perversion' and Crisp says 'I wouldn't call it *suffering*'.

One of my fave lines is, 'I don't believe in abroad - I think they're all cheating. I think they all speak English when our backs are turned.'

Though nowt can top 'Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag them down to your level instead - it's cheaper.'

reply

No. The nearest line to that is probably "I am one of the stately homos of England"

I loved when he is being interviewed for the military and they ask what purpose he thinks he'd serve in it, and he replies "Anyone can get killed!"

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

So many life affirming lines such as:

(when asked what Quentin plans to do today) "I shall stay home and experiment with a new shade of eye colour"

when thrown out of a then version of a gay bar "evidently health consists of having the same diseases as one's neighbours"

"THERE IS NO GREAT DARK MAN"

What a legend - and to think that some sad self styled queer leaders in the 70's and to this day deride him as not being politically correct.

He had style. They had chips on their shoulders.
