spoilers in text wondering why what happened did ? any thoughts

Wonderful film and acting, I was just transfixed, hard too believe with one set and a few characters.

Why does everyone you think about Josie and Jim not getting together, I was puzzling it last night, did he think his character would cause her as much suffereing as he felt he had caused his Mum because of the drink ?

would be interested in seeing what everyone thinks ?
