The annoying skateboard kid scene

This short little scene was intriguing to me in many aspects.

1) I've viewed many a movie, and this is by far the WORST dialogue exchange that I've ever heard. I actually feel stupider after seeing it.

2) It shows how an 8 year old kid can push Joe Don Bakers buttons

3) What was the point to this scene, comic relief? To highlight Bakers acting abilities? A subliminal ad for men to get vasectomies?

Here is the dialogue

Kid: Hi!

Mitchell: Hmph.

Kid: Are you the man from the insurance?

Mitchell: no.

Kid: He came last night.

Mitchell: no.

Kid: My mother does'nt like you.

Mitchell: I don't like your mother.

Kid: Why not?

Mitchell: Why not?

Kid: No, why not?

Mitchell: No, why not?

Kid: Why are you repeating what I say?

Mithcell: Why are you repeating what I say?

Kid: I'm not

Mitchell: Well, I'm not

Kid: You are

Mitchell: Buzz off

Kid: What?

Mitchell: What?

Kid: What did you say?

Mtchell: What did you say?

Kid: Did you say something?

Mitchell: Did you say something?

Kid: You said "Buzz off"

Mitchell: Your lying through your teeth

Kid: Your lying through your teeth

Mitchell: Buzz off huh!!

Kid: Buzz off

Mitchell: Buzz off kid!!

Thus ends the ABSOULTE MOST HORRENDOUS piece of dialogue known to man.

'Quest for fire' had more stimulating dialogue.

Im a big MST fan, I've seen many bad movies, Is there a dialogue exchange in MST world that is more mind numbing than this?

reply

Yes, there was a more annoying piece of dialogue:

It's in the beginning of "Track of the Moonbeast", where the dim-bulb photographer explains the little joke of frightening "Paaaaawl" with the mask. The expository dialogue goes on for a good two pages, while everyone else in the scene (there are no cutaways) looks for something to do.

IMHO, this episode is right up there with Mitchell for being one of the worst (and funniest) MST3K episodes of all time. I still laugh at the thought of the chubby sheriff who can't seem to stand without something to lean against, with his thumbs hooked into his gun belt. That and Johnny Longbow (insert your own joke here) ad-libbing his secrets in his secret stew: "Corn...chicken...green peppers...onions..."

I'll have to check that one out, thanks

True dat. And even the setup was stupid. "Sorry for rushing the Halloween season!" That has to be one of the DUMBEST lines ever in a movie.

Another favorite from MST3K for me was in Touch of Satan: "This is where the fish lives!" Fortunately that was just the one line.

Why not phone up Robin Hood,
And ask him for some wealth distribution?

reply

In the original movie, he and the kid actually say, "Piss off!" to each other. Not sure if that makes the dialogue any better.

reply

When Servo just screamed in the middle of it I nearly pissed my pants.

reply

The dialouge is both Cheesy,Funny and Annoying

reply

This movie was one hum dinger of a loser.

reply

Servo screaming did make the entire scene

For England, for home, and for the prize!

Mitchell, you sexy beast!

reply

The inspiration for "Cop and a Half"!

reply

"You know, Captain, every year of my life I grow more and more convinced that the wisest and the best is to fix our attention on the good and the beautiful. If you just take the time to look at it."

"You're some guy, Makonnen."

Chief?
McCloud!

That or Peter Graves speech at the end of "It conquered the world", or the 5 minute scene in Manos which is just a series of jump cuts between Torgo, the husband, and the wife.

So, I take it that this scene in "Mitchell" convinced Todd Bass (the kid in the ratty clothes) that he didn't really want a career where he'd have to do scenes like this after all.

It was utterly embarressing to watch a grown man stoop to the level of a bratty 8 year old. Mitchell is like an old relative you never try to see and then when you do see him you remember why you didn't. It would be unwatchable without Joel and the Bots.

I loved the scene, thought it was really funny. Besides it was pretty strong stuff in the 70s to have a cop say "Piss off" to a little kid. Actually, the scene doesn't work at all with "Buzz off".

reply

"Piss off" is more a British term than American... no surprise; the writer, Ian Kennedy Martin, was a Brit.

reply

I thought the fact that the kid clearly couldn't ride a skateboard was hilarious. He nearly broke his leg.

I'm just not sue how much of his original screenplay was left in the final film.

reply

I thought the kid was Linda Evans's character's kid; he showed up right after she wrote "Jerk" on the car saying "my mom doesn't like you."

reply

That's a good theory, actually! I've wondered why he suddenly popped up since watching the MST3K episode when it aired all those years ago. Pretty funny we're still talking about it. What a crazy scene.
