the audio commentary on the new DVD
Not to insult the guys who did it, as they clearly did their homework and taught me a few interesting facts in the commentary... but COME ON! They were obviously just reading prepared notes, and often having a hard time doing so. The worst has to be when Godzilla first appears - you can tell the guy is pretty excited by the whole thing but he's commentating in a decidedly unexciting way, sounding really phony and sing-song like this is the first time ever he'd read this out loud.
I'm not Mr. Charisma myself and don't know nearly as much Godzilla trivia but I KNOW I could do a much better, at least more natural-sounding commentary than that.
It would have made more sense to just have Teruyoshi Nakano (who is still alive and quite lucid) do a commentary in Japanese, then subtitle it... that's what they did for the Shriek Show discs of the older Toho movies.
