Rather than going into this one with a plan (as in, Godzilla dying), they were intended to make another film as usual the next year but Japanese cinema was having a really rough period and money was scarce.

It didn't help that Terror of Mechagodzilla didn't do too hot at the box office either, so the franchise just kinda faded away.

It wasn't until the mid-eighties that they got both the cash and the studio & public goodwill to get another Godzilla film together.

So Godzilla had to survive for that. (Ghidrah appears in Godzilla vs. Gigan, suggesting that entries after DAM take place in the present.)

But a chronological timeline is never really established for the sequels after "Destroy" either. While many think Ghidrah died in DAM, I've never felt that to be the case.

The Japanese versions of the 70s films often told that they take place in their year of release. In other words, they do not take place in the 21st century after "Destroy All Monsters".

POSSIBLE SPOILERS

In TERROR, it ended with Godzilla walking away in the ocean last I remember. Reminded me of the ending to Godzilla: Final Wars.

Yep, the end of two eras. But luckily, nowhere as depressing as how the Heisei series ended with Godzilla falling apart in meltdown to the tune of angelic music in Destroyah. Dammit, now I'm tearing up again...

Personally, I found Godzilla's scream as he falls into the volcano at the end of 1985 sadder.

The director retired from the Godzilla franchise and started the Honda car company
