The official DVD is still crappy unfortunately.. it's misframed at a ratio somewhere around 1:78.1, which means the sides are chopped off. This causes some annoying problems like subtitles missing from the edges, and shots being ruined by actors being cut in half on the edge of the picture while talking! Whoever approved this transfer should be shot.. good movie though, I guess we should be thankful it's available at all.

reply

The transfer on this import release is the same as the official DVD release from ScreenSound Australia. I previously owned the ScreenSound release and everything that was on that DVD, including special features, are on this so called 'official' import release. The film was shot in Panavasion (2.35:1 ratio). As the previous poster stated, the framing ratio on the import DVD is incorrect. The same applies to the ScreenSound DVD release. What's ironic is that the theatrical trailer found on both DVDs is shown in its correct 2.35:1 Panavision ratio. I wondering whether a print of the film, in its correct aspect ratio was even available.

reply

ScreenSound could have transfered MFHK in the correct ratio, but the DVD wholesaler told them not to, based on the totally incorrect reasoning that home viewers did not want black bars top and bottom. (Give me a break!) The HK Flix release is a direct rip of the whole ScreenSound DVD. Hopefully, one day this will be put right. I hope people can still enjoy the merits of my film in this condition.

The Fortune Star DVD release does appear to be out of print, but can be found at times on eBay.

I bought this official DVD and yes it is a great DVD and film and the one I have is great quality soi=und and vision wise. It waas a great hit hear in Australia when it was first released. It is a Madman release who specialise in hard to get titles.

I noticed in the main page that IMDB have listed the star as Yu Wang, well gonged out because it is Jimmy Wang Yu the HK action superstar of the time. He is the star of the Five Fingers of Death a classic Hong Kong Chop Socky movie from the same era. George Lazenby stars as the Aussie detective joining forces with Wang Yu to catch a crime boss Jack Wilton in James Bond style with action sequences and a bevvy of beauties.

If yoiu haven't had the pleasure of seeing this film on DVD do yourself a favour and you will be pleasantly surprised. Just a bit of trivia, this film projected British Jigsaw to the top of the Top 40 charts for their song Sky High.

To me this is a 9 out of 10 top off only by the Bruce Lee films.

I know that this is nearly 6 years after the initial post but it is available here in Australia as a region free release for just on $6:00 and if anyone out there still wants it I am prepared to send it to you for that plus postage. I don't know where the poster who said the DVD is crap quality got his copy from but the one I have is really good and it is in English, not dubbed.

Australia had some great action films in the 1970's such as Stone and Mad Max, should never have been changed to the Road Warrior although that one could be Mad Max 2.

The Australian DVD (original, not bootleg) is all region despite being labelled as region 4. Not sure what's worse though, the Australian disc being cropped or the HK disc having scenes missing...

Be horny.

Video Ezy have this on DVD for anywhere between $9.95 to 19.95 it is a double disc

"Don't dream and drive" Fred Krueger ANOES5

reply

The double disc edition, released under Madman Entertainment, is in the 2.35:1 ratio, and is restored.

reply

Well I just bought mine today - I'm in Australia and it's been released through Madman.
The aspect ratio's 2.35:1 and 16X9 enhanced, audio looks to be the original 2.0 stereo. It's a 2 disc set and the picture looks pretty good.

Australian version, uncut and remastered in Anamorphic 2.35:1.

Runs at just under 102 mins PAL which is equivalent to 106 mins Film/NTSC.

The US version was 3 mins shorter at 103 mins.

The back cover (and IMDB) incorrectly state the run time as 111 mins.
