Does anyone know 20th Century Fox has never released this on video?

Like the reveiwer, I too have always had a soft spot for this film. I saw it in the theater when it was brand new, and to this day, I can remember the great time the audience had. Yes, it is interrupted about 2/3 of the way through with graphic violence which seems out of place relative to the tone of the film up to that point. However, in my opinion, it was not enough for me to dismiss the rest of the film. The movie boasts a veteran director, and 3 A-List actors. Considering the amount junk that is available on video and DVD, I can't figure out why Fox hasn't bothered to release this for purchase. I ended up taping it from the WE channel but that's as close as I've been able to get to owning my own copy.

I agree. Lets contact FOX. I want a copy. It's a great movie.

I'm in too. You know the studios monitor IMDB, so here's a petition!

If you can find someone at FOX to email I'll join you. I to want a copy. Can't understand why it's not out. It must be money issues.

i think the movie would do well as a dvd release. i enjoyed the heck out of it even though i watched a vhs tape of it that was recorded when the movie was shown on a tv movie channel. the recording is terrible but i still laughed myself silly watching it. my only disappointment for the whole movie was that billy was killed off. other than that it was a great movie...

Put Me on that list too.
I have been trying to see it again for years.

Lottsa Luck on getting anyone at 20th Cntury Fox to wake up and smell the money. It's more like an INTELLIGENCE issue. In their anal-retentive state they somehow think that by sqeezing out 4 or 5 of their 'classics' each year they are 'controlling' the market and thus the value of their library, Dumb *beep* I've written again and again about how "the audience for their 30's 40's and even their 50's movies is dieing off and when they DO release these films on DVD they'll have to be sold in the $5.50 bin at Walmart", but to no avail. It took them YEARS to come out with "What A Way To Go" a really great comedy from the early 60's. Likewise I'm waiting for Gene Wilder's "Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother" & "The World's Greatest Lover" Stanley Donan's "Movie Movie" and nameless others. They finally shook loose "Nightmare Alley" Tyrone Power's greatest performance. Hey put me on any and all lists! If we can get Foxes head out of its pucker, maybe they'll hear that the demand for movies on DVD is out there along with the millions it can bring them. Those old films are falling apart in vaults and they may soon be worth NOTHING. They're certainly not making any money this way.

astralv- Thanks so much for the information. but, NEWS FLASH!! (You may already know this) Both "Sherlock Holmes Smarter Brother" & "World's Greatest Lover" are due out on DVD April 4th. I saw it on Amazon's 'New and Future' release list last week. Let's hope the dawn is breaking at, (I guess) Fox Video. If they need a list I've got a one of about 400 films from the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's,....(well you get the idea) they can consider.

My apologies to the rest on this thread for deviating from "Lucky Lady". (Which is near the top of that list I mentioned.)

...or maybe its more of a "rights" issue.

Just saw this in the IMDB Trivia Section for this flick...

Title has never been released on video or DVD due to a music clearance issue.

So, obviously, there's an issue with some of the music used in the movie.

Odd thing though, I swear I once rented this movie.
Weird.
I wish they'd just clear up the matter and get the thing out for the home market already.

What in the wide wide world of sports is'a goin' on around here?!

I agree with everyone. I have looked for this film, periodically, for quite some time. I saw it as a kid, and loved it. It had much attendance, and the audience really liked it.

On interesting note, I had dinner with Robby Benson a couple of years ago. We talked about this film. Robby never mentioned that he wore a wig, although he might had. He said the film nearly broke Fox, financially, due to poor box office. I told Robby it was so well recieved in my hometown.

Maybe Fox is still sore about it. Yet, highly doubtful. I'm sure most of the execs there, are a bunch of rich kids who do not know of the film and could care less.

You still could score with Minnelli fans on this. They're pretty loyal and high in numbers.

It was released as a PAL video in Australia in 1991. I found a copy on eBay a couple of years ago. It may have been released in the US - try here

i've been looking for this movie on dvd for years. i loved it as a kid and saw it again a couple years ago...and it was still great. does it get any better than the music in the final boat battle scene?!

I'm with you all. Saw it as a kid myself and have always loved it. I know it was considered a bomb at the time, but creatively the movie is very entertaining. It's just a really fun summer matinee. The violent attack (and death of Robby Benson's character) some people seem to have a problem with, is important I think, because it raises the stakes on the whole thing. It adds just enough life and death reality to make the climactic battle and revenge on the bad guy (the great John Hillerman) twice as satisfying. And as someone mentioned, the music is fantastic. I actually just had someone transfer the LP soundtrack to CD. Much has been made about the change in endings, but I honestly think they did the right thing - it is a lark of a movie and it needed a happy ending. They one they settled on is perfect.

What is Fox thinking??? So much crap gets released, but not this. And I hope if and WHEN they release it, they give us a great WIDESCREEN transfer.

I'll sign any petition!

I also enjoyed this movie the one time I saw it, which just happened to be during Coast Guard basic training. Imagine, if you will, a crowd of mostly enlisted Coast Guard members rolling with laughter as the on-screen officer acts the fool. (Of course, it didn't hurt that Liza was SMOKIN'.) Definitely one that I'd pop in the DVD player every so often for grins and giggles.

I know it had a VHS release many years ago (perhaps a laser disc). I bought a burned dvd that looked like it was transferred from VHS (about a picture quality 7). If anybody has a better burned dvd copy, let me know. I'm willing to purchase or trade.

FYI: A divx version (fullscreen 640x464) of the movie, apparently taped off the 'Love Stories' channel, has been posted to abm.vintage-film.post-1960 about 2 weeks ago. You can get the nzb from binsearch.info, just search for 'lucky lady minelli'.

Add my name to the petition. I saw this movie at the theater with my whole family more than once in 1975. Then watched it on cable many years later. Some time in the late 80s I think. It's a very entertaining movie. It doesn't deserve the "bomb status" it's been tagged with at all.

I'd love to see it released on DVD.

Put me on the list too. Saw this movie at the drive-in (anybody remember those?) with my parents. loved the battle music.
