lack of emotion.... (minor spoiler)

so... they get thru the tunnel, pop up to take a look... one of the guys gets munched in the first minute. the very next scene they are laughing it up and playing the record player...guess no-one will miss the guy that got munched!

its not bad, if you don't look too closely. very "journey to the center of the earth" - ish. i'm going to guess J Verne wrote his first.

They don't care in the novel, either, where the guy (Plesser) doesn't even get a name and there is a great deal of prejudice against the Germans, who are, to a man, depicted as cartoonish World War I-era brutish stereotypes.

Sure, Bowen does make an effort to save him which is more than anyone does for him in the movie, but once he's been eaten, their only concern is that with him dead, the balance of power aboard the sub is "where it should be," as now they outnumber the Germans. They even later joke about how the plesiosaurus they kill and eat might be the same one that ate him.

"I mean, really, how many times will you look under Jabba's manboobs?"

Yeah, I noticed that as well.
