Why does Bowen trust Dietz...?

Why does Bowen trust Dietz so implicitly? This is the same guy who smashed the radio and sided with von Schoenvorts when he retook the sub, and did both very, very smugly. And yet Dietz is basically given free reign to come and go as he pleases and treated as a confidant by Bowen. Why? He cooperates, I guess, but Bowen should know it's just an act.

I've heard of "keeping your friends close and your enemies closer," but Bowen honestly doesn't act like he takes Dietz seriously as a threat, when he clearly is, and the severely misplaced trust he puts in him is what leads to the compass getting sabotaged.

"I mean, really, how many times will you look under Jabba's manboobs?"
