'Tangle A**holes'?

Was this a misread line that they couldn't afford to do a second take of or did this use to be an actual expression? I mean, I've heard of tangling, but tangling a**holes? What does that mean? And is it even physically possible to do that? I could tell what the guy was getting at, but that's one hell of a way to put it.
Any info on this hilarious and bizarre bit of dialogue would be greatly appreciated.

'To “tangle a**holes” meant to argue or fight.' from "Coming out under fire: the history of gay men and women in World War II"

Go to google books and search the term. It's military slang, and likely an allusion to the sheriff's dark secret.
