The cover-up plan

I watched this with subtitles on this week (engineering work outside making a ruckus) and noticed so much more in the dialogue that was written up, especially during scenes with multiple people talking at once.

For the first time, I picked up that the news guy was planning to 'bury the story' of Mrs Kintner's reward at the back of the paper.

I also noticed properly for the first time that Mrs Taft was a strong advocate for ignoring the problem, saying it wasn't proven that there was a shark, even though she witnessed the attack at the beach the day before!?

Though my favorite line - "24 hours is like 3 weeks!!" - was still in there. Always makes me howl.

I never understood why "24 hours is like 3 weeks!!" was such a big deal for people.
It's a small town so a typical day wouldn't generate much revenue...in the tourist season she'd sell 20x more.
Seems like a fair complaint to me.

For a summer destination 4th of July is the biggest day of the year. Hotels, restaurants, souvenir stands, etc. would peak the day before, of, and after the holiday. An island town that relies on summer business sees maybe 15% of that in the cold months.

Think if Salem, Massachussets, had to close down for Halloween to get an idea of the impact.

Of course everyone fears losing income, and even in a disaster where people are dying, there are always people who think their own income is more important than other people's lives, and governmental officials who agree.

Look at the current pandemic, and all the people who cried that lockdowns may have been saving lives and saving the healthcare system, but it was costing bars and restaurants money! And look at all the politicians who refused to impose restrictions on the public, in the name of supporting business.

Or maybe they prefer to feed their families rather than feed a mythical hoax that has been totally unproven by science.

You're right! Giant movie man-eating sharks don't exist!

COVID-19, on the other hand...

That's what Mayor Vaughn and the select men said about Chrissie Watkins and Alex Kintner.

"We have caught and killed a large virus that supposedly injured some people. But, as you see, it's a beautiful day, the restaurants and bars are open, and people are having a wonderful time. COVID, as you know, means friendship."
