Brody in the NYPD

Did the book mention anything about Brody's time as a New York City police officer? I'm guessing he wasn't a uniformed man on the street, he had to have some kind of rank for Amity to make them their Chief. Was he a detective, or a even a Captain? And was it really simply being burned out by the city in the 70's that caused him to leave, or was something else going on?

Also, despite having a small year round population, shouldn't Amity still have a larger police force. I'm sure there's more officers than just Brody and Deputy Hendricks, and we just didn't see them. You would figure at least 4 year round officers. But starting at Memorial Day, thru Labor Day, it would be their summer season and at any given time they could have up to 1000 visitors there. Brody mentioned that the summer help wasn't coming until the 4th of July, but certainly they would already have been in summer mode, and had more officers there.
