The sequel??

Hello everyone,

I've just heard some rumours that there is going to be a sequel released somewhat in 2008. Ostensibly, Zhenya and Nadya did not marry each other and went to their former significant others instead. After 30 years, Zhenya's son Zhenya accidentally meets Nadya's daughter Nadya (duh...).
I was very upset about this piece of news, the script sounds awful. What do you think of it?

I agree and I was also disappointed to hear that there is a sequel that is in production at this time. Also, the plot is much too similar to that of the original film.

I have read an interview with Barbara Brylska and she said she had been offered the role in the sequel already in 2004 but that it is still the plan and no shooting began yet. It looks quite uncertain if the shooting begins at all. Now she is shooting a New Year's film but it isn't the sequel of the Irony of Fate. I personally hope that no sequel is shooted, because the film is so great that any sequel could only spoil it.

The Russian language Wikipedia has an article on the sequel. It would be directed by Timur Bekmambetov (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0067457/) who has previously directed some quite successful titles, such as Night Watch (2004) and Day Watch (2006).

I hope they wont actually do it..... It sounds awful.... And if Timur Bekmambetov directs it, the movie will be like another Watch!

My Goodness...
Even for all the world's treasures I'm not gonna watch it if (I hope 'if', not 'when') it's shot. No way, Timur. No way.
The original film was like a bomb and still touches my heart ('cause I'm Russian and I watch it every New Year's Eve like all the other Russians do =)).
Eh...

reply

Oy...
There are some sequels which are merely unneccessary, but I feel this is the worst kind. The unneccessary sequels that actually spoil the magic of the original movie.
That's what happened with "A Man and a Woman : 20 Years Later" (though luckily that film has been forgotten), that's what happened with the recent sequel to another Ryazanov classic - "Carnival Night" (Karnavalnaya Noch'). I fear this will be the same thing (except unlike with "Carnival Night 2", Ryazanov is not even directing the sequel...)
These stories are tied so closely to people's childhoods, to memories, they are supposed to be like fairy-tales, with a "Happily ever after" ending. And making a sequel in which "their relationship didn't work out" spoils the original film.

Eh, I'll wait 10 years before watching it (see if anyone says it's good then, though I'm not getting my hopes up)

I personally think it was very unnecessary.
While the whole "50 Years Later" idea (with as many of the same actors as possible) really WAS interesting, it was largely a repeat of all the same jokes with newer sounding music and none of the magic and atmosphere of the original :(

All IMHO, of course.

Here's my idea for a sequel. Zhenya finds himself in yet another city in a drunken stupor in someone else's apartment, and ditches Nadya to chase the occupant of said apartment, just as he previously ditched Galya. Meanwhile Galya meets a faithful man who doesn't drink and they live happily ever after.

One word, blokes. One word. No, two words, actually.
SPECIAL EFFECTS!
I bet there's gonna be a whole lot of SPECIAL EFFECTS!
Otherwise it won't be considered a movie in our modern "cinematograph".
Ah, I'm already getting excited thinking of how SPECIALEFFECTIVE it's gonna be!

(Heh. If the movie turns out to be worth watching, i'm gonna delete this comment. I mean... who knows, eh?)
