I love this movie. I've only seen it in the original Russian (I live in Russia and am studying the language) but I still find it hilarious and tragic and very, very unique. I think a lot of American writers could learn from this film.

It always gives me an uncontrollable urge to make a big tub of Olivier salad.

Fantastic! We watched it this morning and my wife is making Olivier salad right now. We'll probably watch it again and have more Olivier Salad for Russian New Year as well. My 5 year old son also enjoyed it

I've seen this film 16 times, from which, you might guess, I'm 16 and I'm Russian born. It's a tremendous film. It really is one of those movies which never get old. People watch them over and over again and always notice something new. That's one of those aspects of Russian cinema.

Anybody know if and where I can get the soundtrack lyrics (in Russian) online?

reply

you can try to look for it at www.allofmp3.com there should be a sountrack and there are few compilations from ryazanov's films that are also very good.

After seen the film so many times, me and my dad can pretty much talk for the characters. There are so many notable quotes from it maybe some day when I have more time I shall add a few. I love it when Zhenya, still drunk rolls of the couch and starts calling out for this mother “Mama, mama!” and Nadya hiding behind some furniture says sternly “Mama went away!”.

Agreed. Great film.

I thought the movie was amazing. It's one of my fiance's (Belarussian from Minsk) favorite films. I find it much better than any of the romantic comedies from this country.

reply

This movie is a masterpiece, as are most other films directed by Eldar Ryazanov. Now there's a talent, a bigger-than-life personality, who could create such gems in the suffocating conditions of communist Russia, and have fun doing it. Even his satire is light-hearted, and not politically embittered.

Blossomrules - there must be something about Belarussians and this movie. I am originally from Minsk, like your fiance :-)

reply

russiandvd.com sells it with English subtitles. My husband is from Scotland (I am a russian speaker), and last year we watched it together right before the new years!

reply

I'm also originally from Minsk! :o) And I adore this movie and everything about it! It's a personal tradition of mine to watch this movie each year right before New Year's (usually on December 30th or around then). It's absolutely brilliant!

reply

This movie is the best! I've seen it around 7 times already and I still love it! Every russian will tell you that in Russia that's how you know the New Year has come.... all tv channels show this movie! lol

reply

My family (we moved from Russia when I was 2) loves this! We watch it about every year and this year we're watching it on New Year's Eve (which is like our Christmas). :)
