Why no miniseries!!???

Diana Rigg is an all-time favorite actress of mine. However, truth be told, this film is but a shell of the masterful story Rumer Godden told. Had they had the luxury of filming it as a miniseries instead, I'm sure I would have loved it more, as the casting was spot on. It's just the fact that all those marvelous nuns that didn't make this film are just waiting to have their story told. (Dame Veronica---what a great role that would be. Gosh, who would I cast!? ) I've got to believe that one day this will be produced as a miniseries, which can delve into all those terrific subplots from the book.

I'd love to see a miniseries also. Too many of the subplots were given short shrift in the movie. I disliked the whole idea of having Sister Joanna be a sort of stand in for the "daughter" that Philippa lost. In the book the entire backstory of the loss of her son gives so much depth and meaning to her aloofness and perceived coolness towards children.

At one point some of the nuns are talking about Dame Philippa's dislike of children. One of them says that during recreation "She never even glanced at the snap of my nephew."

The novel delves very deeply into the private demons and tragedies that she battled and overcame.

This is one book that I pull off the shelf and reread ever so often when I am in need of some quiet, reflective time. It always calms my soul.
