I thought it took a while to really get going, but I thought it was great in the end.

It certainly takes its precious time meandering about, but knowing it´s Wenders, one would kind of expect as much. It´s a good film and one which always seemed to know where it´s going even if, apparently, its director quite didn´t while shooting it, but it never really clicked with me the way it should... and in the very end it still managed to be pretty wordily explicit about its concerns. Also, its silences and underdramatized goings-on never quite amounted to the kind of impact they tend to do in Antonioni, for instance. Certainly prefer Wenders´s more incident-laden Der Amerikanische Freund from the next year.

I've shown this film to all of my friends, most of whom ran out and bought the UK DVD afterward. One of my friends found it boring; It's one of several reasons why I don't speak with him anymore.
