What was the point of this?

I get the whole Dom/sub thing and the movie had some great erotic scenes but the story made no sense. WHat is the plot? What did we learn? What ?

Rene seemed to me like a weak idiot. Sir Stephen had absolutely nothing worth submitting for. O became stronger yes but by being tricked into serving Sir Stephen when all she wanted was Renee. On top of that Stephen was right when he said she was easily aroused and used submitting for Renee as an excuse to get her kicks. None of the characters seem to have any real emotion for anything. To me this movie represents nothing having to do with domination/submission and had to do with alot of psychological screwed depraved people.

I didnt read the book but from what i can tell from other posts O either stays with Stephen , becomes a sex slave at the retreat place, or kills herself. The last 2 are *beep* options and the first one seems like it isnt really the answer and if it is doesnt seem like something sustainable. This is why i ask what the hell is the point of this story. It does nothing to enlighten as to the D/S relationships and the philosophies behind it. Its just perversions and circle jerks for the sake of perversions and circle jerk

As just a movie, i could be a little less critiquing and enjoyed it more. But when this is hailed as some great masterpiece of BDSM, I say get the hell out of here. Mind you i like BDSM and the variety of flavors but this movie actually made me start questioning its validity and purpose.

Is there a movie that actually portrays a realistic version of Domme/Submission?

I have no disagreement with anything you say, although i'm not aware of anyone hailing it as a great masterpiece of BDSM. Some people do like it, and some don't -- pretty much like anything else.

If there is anything to be "learned" (and I'm not convinced that everything has to result in "learning", I'm more inclined to think that the learning is more associated with the circumstances and purpose of the original novel, then contained with the novel or movie.

Apparently, dogs are wolves with Williams-Beuren Syndrome.

i read it as a young teenager, probaably sixteen. i loved it and feared it at the same time. i tried to get into it again years later and just couldn't. It was pathetic and totally no redeming value at all.

Seeing Corinne Cléry naked.

It's more of a character piece that explores the build-up and the aftermath of the experience than the experience itself.
