Kill Bill!

Anyone notice Tarantino did an homage in Kill Bill Vol. 1 to Adele H.?

When Adele writes "Victor Hugo" in the dust on the mirror, and then wipes it off, it's almost exactly the same as when Hanzo writes "Bill" on the window, and The Bride wipes it off with her sleeve.

I love finding all the references! It makes me feel so priveleged!

And anyone else think Truffaut was in love with Adele?

He titled it Adele H., because he respected her story, not wanting to draw a crowd because of her father's name.

There are a lot of shots that just rest on her face.

She reminds me of the guy at the end of Stolen Kisses, who says the speech about being "permanent" in a "temporary" world.

I bet Adele was the "permanent" kind of woman that Truffaut was looking for in all his movies.

Are you sure it's an intentional reference? Tarantino doesn't strike me as the kind of person who'd be a fan of a film like Adele. . .though I suppose there are some mild similarities between this and Kill Bill.

Last film seen: Robert Bresson's Pickpocket - Brilliant!

Well Tarrantino's production company is called A Band Apart, after Godard's movie Bande à part.

"Kill Bill" is pretty much "The Bride Wore Black" so, yes, it's intentional. The question should be: what was the point of Tarantino referencing it? Not much, I'd gather.

reply

Kill Bill was also highly influenced by the "Lady Snowblood" films

reply

I'm not sure this is a reference to this film, but it could be... Tarantino is great at "reimagining" classic scenes (the dance scene in "Bande a Part" into the dance scene in "Pulp Fiction", for instance).

I am an island. I am bloody Ibiza!

"Don't Jimmie me Jules, ok. Don't *beep* Jimmie me, Jules."
- Pulp Fiction

This is a reference to the great film "Jules and Jim" by Truffaut.

reply

Of course Tarantino would be knowledgable with Truffaut's work. It's freakin' TRUFFAUT!

reply

Wow, good call there reservoir

tarantino likes truffaut and a lot of the europeans. i suggest those who think he only watches westerns, gangsters, blaxploitation and kung fu check out the documentary "Z Channel: A Magnificent Obsession". tarantino waxes romantic over sam fuller, visconti, and many others.

reply

waxes romantic in a crazy manic way I bet : )

reply

at one point - but in another he's discussing visconti's 'the leopard' as a beautiful film and he's relaxed and almost beatific in recollection...
