Beautiful and Touching!

This is without a doubt one of the best movies from the 70's. Adjani shines brilliantly as her character goes through many changes. Bruce Robinson was a surprise after seeing him as the fresh-faced Benvolio in Zeffirelli's 1968 version of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. Love, unrequited love is this movie's theme. Director Truffaut (sp?) captured the intense emtion of each scene perfectly.

A MUST SEE!

I agree. It was a wonderful film. The script was excellent, as was the camerawork and cinematography. Adjani nailed her role beautifully. Besides Adjani, the rest of the acting is pretty mediocre---not bad, just mediocre--but it doesn't matter, because the only one with a really big role is Adjani. Wonderful film!
I didn't find it boring, because if you watch her closely at the beginning she conveys a lot of sadness and other emotions, and the camerawork is also quite expressive.

YES!I love this movie.Adjani is great and beautiful.

It's a very good movie, but not for the usual reasons. The direction was disciplined and restrained and Adjani's portrayal of Adele was harrowing, as it should have been.

Love it. It's one of my most favorite foreign films of all time.

Agreed.

I agree wholeheartedly. I had the good fortune to see this when it first opened in the U.S. I had made a point of seeing every Truffaut film after first seeing Jules and Jim. I didn't know anything about the daughter of Victor Hugo, and had never heard of Isabelle Adjani, but after seeing it the first time (I have seen it countless times since), I knew I had seen a great film and a great performance. I was thrilled when Adjani began taking nearly all of the critics' awards at year end, and still think Oscar loss was a terrible mistake. And I couldn't believe it didn't garner an Oscar nomination for the cinematography.

Compared to "Jules & Jim", "Day for Night" and "The 400 Blows", this is a minor Truffaut, but still pretty good - thanks mostly to Adjani's superb performance. She was better than Louise Fletcher (who won the Oscar for "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and was borderline supporting), but you know they wouldn't give another Oscar to a foreign actress so soon... (wait - they still havent; Sophia Loren was the first and last one in 1961; hopefully that'll change next year if Marion Cotillard deservedly wins for "La Vie en Rose").

My #4 film of that year and Adjani should have won Oscar. My favorite Truffaut film.

This is one of my favorite Truffaut films. Great portrayal of unrequited love turning to obsession.

Good film, I'll agree.

Ever been distracted by a bad performance or a bad score in a movie? The same thing happened to me with this one, but in a good way: Isabelle Adjani was (is) just too damn beautiful..

Signature must be fewer than 100 characters in length
