The other aspects I agree with completely.
I agree with both of you - at first we're meant to see the parallels between Chaney and the cat....then, in the end, when Chaney gives Speed and Poe the gift, we're meant to see one of the things that separates humans from animals - the ability to sympathize and be generous. Of course, this is just my opinion...I also think this is hinted at a couple of times throughout the film, when Chaney talks about the "in-betweens". Cats have no use for in-betweens...they just want to eat and sleep. But, Chaney doesn't cling to these in-betweens either. Once he fills them, he's gone...like a cat. We can assume he'll try to fill those in-betweens when he feels the need again, presumably in another town.

That was just a test to see if Chaney would "beg" to stay with her and to see if he really wanted to commit. Obviously he didn´t. He dropped her and not the other way around. That´s the all point of the movie and the Chaney character. share
