As a child I can still remember the news picking up this story and Mrs. Kennedy out of embarrassment sending money to get the house fixed up.
It was a big deal that someone related to the Kennedys lived like this.

I meant Jackie Kennedy Onassis(I should have been specific). She was embarrassed by the media coverage that her aunt and cousin were living in squalor.
I know the utilities got turned back on and the house was cleaned up.
It was a big scandal at the time.

i think in some ways it's still a big scandal!
things were cleaned up for a while but the house hadn't been properly taken care of for years so it fell into decline not long after.
did you read gg was sold after big edie's death and it took the new owners 4 years to restore it? i can't imagine the work that was needed to get it liveable again.

i'll say it did! i could almost smell it through the tv screen!
it's beautiful now, so much work was done to make it look more incredible than it ever was originally. it's rented to one tenant all year except for a month. the owners use it as a summer home.
