The Smell

How bad must it have smelled in that house, or even the women themselves? No running water and living in total filth with several wild animals. Plus it's 1975, ugh. Serious mental illness going on here but interesting documentary. Hard to believe this is real.

I think over the years, they both just became impervious to the odor and decay. I can't imagine the smell either. I have a cat, and if I'm home and I know my cat is going to the litterbox, I have to literally follow her and scoop/flush it immediately because I can't stand the thought of the smell lingering.
I can understand the Beals, but there is a scene where Jerry is eating corn in the room with them. I really tried not to judge, but I did wonder how on earth they could eat with all that smell...

"Plus it's 1975, ugh."

I was alive in 1975, and I don't remember any particular smell associated with that year.

reply

Agreed. 1975 smelled like success.

That's funny. I don't remember 1975 having a particular smell either, but 1977, now that was totally different.

1978 was pretty ripe also!

Little Edie got to the beach and swam now and then, so she can't Haven been too ripe. Her mother, on the other hand...

But yeah, my reaction to the Edie's and their home might be a lot different if film could record smell.
