PETA?

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) would not have allowed the bird scene to be aired. This was 1975, many years before PETA had the power they do now. Movies and TV are no longer allowed to display scenes with animal cruelty. Movies from the 70's and before, did not have this exclusion like the movies filmed today.

I was six years old when I saw this.
I remember how bad the scene upset me where the kids killed her bird.
Especially when she started crying, but ran back to get more gravel to throw
at the bird because she wanted them to like her !
That is the saddest scene in the world.
I still think about that !

A reaction like this would not only be counter productive in film making it's also a disgraceful display of disrespect for the film makers who have made a remarkably heart felt and sensitive film.

They obviously thought the graphic nature of this moment was appropriate and that should be good enough.

It's a very powerful scene that people never forget and are more likely to be more compassionate about the plight of animals because of it.

Why turn a film into just another grey blob by taking out its teeth and claws?

reply

They would allow the scene to be filmed,as long as the bird didn't get hurt at all.

This was one of the most upsetting scenes in film history, but was an actual bird killed on camera or was it just filmed to appear that way? If children were actually forced to kill one or more birds for a movie that is child abuse.
