better than the first one *spoilers*

The first film seemed a little too whacky for my tastes. For instance, the unlikely near death and then apparent survival and perfect recovery of all of the musketeers towards the end.

This film I liked. I felt more for the character of Athos, and for Faye Dunaway. The sad ending with the death of Constance made it seem more real to me.

I very much disagree. The second film lacks fluidity and a good cohesive narrative structure. It also is very much lacking in footage because it was created almost as an intentional aside to the first film.

I enjoyed both equally, but that Christopher Lee sword fight at the end of "The Four Musketeers" was legendary.

I think they are both great. I think it was intentional that the first one is light-hearted, while the second one is darker. As if a metaphor for the Musketeers (or d'Artagnan, at least) growing up.

They're both great.

The first one was more humorous and had a lot more screen time with Raquel.

The second is a bit darker, has much more screen time with Faye and for me flowed quite a bit better. The time went by very quickly.

I watched these films in part for those two ladies so it was a bit of a shame that they had minor roles in a film each.

All in all I'd maybe lean towards the first one by a hair. The whacky humor was charming and makes it a bit more memorable.

Uhhhh They were filmed at the same time

I don't agree, it's a great film, but I prefer the first one. The first one is more fun, more adventurous, and the action is based around an extended hectic journey and I like that. I love road-trip movies, even if they have to use horses instead of cars!

The second film has less action and more tragedy, and if that's what you like than it's great that someone made a film to your tastes. But the first film is exactly to my tastes, it has absolutely everything I like - great comedy, action, hot guys, fabulous costumes, great score - even a bit of opera! Because yes, the music they use for the riding-at-top-speed sequences is from an opera, it's from Verdi's "Aida".
