OAR?

Does anybody know of a DVD release that's in the original aspect ratio? I got my hands on the R2 but its cropped to 1.78:1 and alot of information is missing from the left and right hand sides. I suspect it was framed for 2.35:1 but can't find an appropriate DVD version. Any leads would be appreciated. Cheers!

So do I but it's so incredibly dark it's hards to see what's going on most of the time.

The DVD released in 2007 is supposed to be in the "original Cinemascope aspect ratio".
Or is this the one you already have?

You can find it at Amazon or at Play:

I've just seen this film on BBC4 and it was shown in 1.78:1 (16:9) - the same as kingfrat's R2 DVD; the film was shot, though, in anamorphic Panavision, 2.35:1.

I didn't notice any evidence of a pan and scan, which would be necessary as there's enough cropped off the sides to make certain shots awkward. I find
this a bit annoying.

I have a DVD of a Techniscope film - 'The Projected Man' - which is also cropped to 16:9 from 2.35:1 without being panned and scanned.

I've got a VHS of it and it looks 2.35:1 whereas the DVD looks about 1.85:1. It was definitley cropped on the DVD.:(

why bother...its a crap movie ! I remember my older brother going to see it at cinema when it was released and then buying the album... was looking forward to seeing this after about 30 odd years but I cant believe how bad the continuity was, of the plot..2 rival bands...singer joins other band.. first gig in a working mens club & an A&R man just happens to be there ..instant stardom etc etc.... terrible! Only good thing is Slade of course and seeing them playing British boutique guitars of the likes of Fenton Weill [ Dave Hill ] & Noddy playing a Ned Callan 'SG tele' . See 'That'll Be The Day' instead. Still a great movie about jumping on the rock n roll rollercoaster....

Most people don't think it's a "crap film". It's generally always gotten good reviews and is considered one of the most realistic, down beat rock films ever made. It's hard to even call "That'll Be The Day" a rock flm when it actually ends with him buying a guitar. I always wonder why people who don't like certain movies bother to search them out on IMBD?

Like previous posters, I believe the recent CE version (Collector's Edition) w/ CD available in the UK is the one you're looking for.

The previous Uk and USA release of the DVD are cropped and of horrible quality imho. So unbearable I'm going to buy the movie again.

Thanks everybody! I'll check it out.

It's a great, great movie. Some hilariously bad acting, but all the more charming for it.

The extras were OK (basically a 56 minute interview programme [not what I'd call a documentary] and a very good booklet) but I would have LOVED some contemporary footage - outtakes, on-set footage etc. The featurette screamed out for it, but was just a series of interview clips with the band and director. That having been said, they were great interviews. There WERE clips from the movie interspersed but they were shown in a different aspect ratio - I can only assume so that we could differentiate them from the featurette. Also, I had to turn the sound up during the interviews, so it became distorted, then it blared out when the movie clips came on.

Maybe there's a definitive version waiting to be released - contemporary footage, performance clips, outtakes etc - but this will do for now.
