Yep yep, I, too, agree...I do love this movie but the ending after Dawn kills Taffy and some of the audience drags waayy too long.

Actually, I think that's one of the most interesting things about this film. The part in prison is genuinely dramatic. I always figured that was intentional on Waters' part. It's not meant to be funny, but actually kind of touching. The electrocution is funny, but the part where she's talking to other prisoners isn't meant to be.

I'm not sure how to explain what I mean, but I think Waters has genuine affection for Dawn. She isn't meant to be just a ridiculous person. I kind of identify with Dawn myself, because the story is about self-deception (with the 'help' of others), and I've deceived myself, too. Most of the story is hilarious, but there's a little sadness to it, too.

In a way, I think of Dawn as the "hero" of the story. Though her values are kind of twisted, she's true to them. She really believes the things she tells Taffy and others and tells the truth at the trial, at least eventually. When she says to the other prisoner, "write about me the rest of your life," that's funny, but it's also sad. And the response of that prisoner confirms that. Remember her girl friend says, "you're so screwed up, baby," in an affectionate way. You're not supposed to laugh during that scene. Dawn came from that "white trash" life and had this little chance at excitement and fame, and that's the only thing she knows how to hang onto.

This could be the funniest movie ever made, but I think it shows even more skill on Waters' and the actors' part that there is this one serious scene inserted in it.
