Udo Kier was supposed to be in this one

But he declined Fassbinder's invitation because he didn't want to go in that direction artistically.
I wonder if he would get the lead part.

Interesting, I hadn't heard that before.

Not sure if I could imagine Udo giving as great a performance as Fassbinder does if he had been cast as the lead. To be honest, I see him more as the manipulative boyfriend character. I think he would have played that part incredibly well.

Kier would be great as the lead character, but his beauty might change some of the plot. Fassbinder was great, but Fox, the lad, was supposed to be crass, common and awkward.

Can't imagine Kier in that role, he does have the wide-eyed innocence and mystical seduction that the role called for but none of the awkwardness and commonality that Fassbinder nailed so well.

Agreed, I can see Udo more as Eugen than Fox. Superb film.
